But here's the thing nobody wants to talk about at the hype party: every time you hand an AI tool your data, you're making a trust decision — and not all of those decisions are safe ones.

The Case for Excitement

The Case for Caution

Supply chain risk. That helpful AI plugin you installed? It might be built on top of a chain of third-party services, each one a potential vulnerability. You're not just trusting one company — you're trusting everyone in the stack.
Shadow AI. Employees adopting AI tools on their own, without IT oversight, is one of the fastest-growing security risks in the enterprise. Every unsanctioned tool is an unmonitored doorway into the organization.
It Will Never Replace Your IT Team
There's a growing temptation, especially among smaller organizations and solo operators, to treat AI as a substitute for real IT expertise. Need to fix a server issue? Ask the chatbot. Need to configure a firewall? Paste the error message and run whatever commands come back. This is a dangerous habit.
AI can generate code, terminal commands, and configuration scripts with impressive fluency. But fluency is not the same as understanding. The core issue is blindly trusting output you don't fully understand. Running a command from an AI is no different from running a command a stranger posted on a forum: if you can't explain what every part of it does, you shouldn't execute it on a system you care about. This applies to scripts, infrastructure changes, database queries, and anything that touches production data. A qualified IT professional doesn't just know what to run, they know why, they know what could break, and they know how to roll it back when something goes wrong.
AI is a brilliant research assistant for your IT team. It can speed up troubleshooting, draft boilerplate configurations, and surface documentation you didn't know existed. But it should augment human expertise, not replace it. The moment you start copying and pasting commands into a terminal without a knowledgeable person reviewing them first, you've turned a productivity tool into a liability.
A Simple Rule of Thumb
Before connecting any AI tool to your accounts or feeding it sensitive information, ask yourself three questions. First, does this tool actually need this level of access to do what I'm asking? Second, what happens to my data after the task is done? is the data stored, shared, or deleted? Third, what's the worst-case scenario if this provider gets breached?
If you can't answer those questions confidently, don't grant the access. Use the tool in a limited, sandboxed way. Paste only what's necessary. Never share passwords directly with any AI service. And treat every AI integration the way you'd treat giving a stranger a key to your office: with healthy, deliberate skepticism.

AI is one of the most powerful tools humanity has ever built. It deserves your enthusiasm. But it also deserves your scrutiny.
